Biographical Note: John Ayers (b. 1738) was a customs official (1760-1792) at the port of Stockton (now Stockton-on-Tees), Durham County, England. He served as a prize master of captured ships (1758) and also as a coal meter before entering the customs service. He was a freemason and also wrote poetry. He was married to Jane Fawcett in 1770.
